Fees

Dealer Fees Explained

Dealer paperwork can include government charges, dealer-imposed fees, and optional products. The names vary by state and dealership, so the goal is not to memorize every label. The goal is to identify who charges the fee, what it covers, and whether it is required.

Key points

  • Taxes, title, and registration are different from dealer fees.
  • A documentation fee is charged by the dealership, not the government.
  • Add-ons should be listed separately from required charges.
  • Compare the full out-the-door price between dealers.

Common government and dealer charges

  • Sales tax: based on state and local rules.
  • Title and registration: government charges to record and register the vehicle.
  • Documentation or processing fee: a dealer charge for handling paperwork.
  • Electronic filing fee: may cover electronic registration processing.
  • Delivery, preparation, or reconditioning: ask exactly what service was performed.

Which fees may be negotiable?

A dealership may say that a specific fee is charged on every transaction. Even if the fee itself is not removed, you can still negotiate the vehicle price or another dealer-controlled amount so the total deal improves.

Government taxes and registration charges generally are not dealer profit, but they should still match the applicable rules and documentation.

Watch for duplicate or vague charges

Ask for clarification when two fees appear to cover the same task, or when a line has a broad name such as service package, protection, prep, or adjustment. A clear buyer's order should show each item and its price.

  • Ask whether the charge is government-required, dealer-required, or optional.
  • Request the same quote without optional products.
  • Compare the written total with the advertised price.

The best comparison number

Comparing individual fees can be useful, but the out-the-door price is the clearest way to compare offers. It combines the selling price, taxes, required charges, and selected products before financing costs.
